The BioQUEST Library is an academic, peer-reviewed publication of electronic curricular materials published in annual volumes (the 1998 BioQUEST Library being the fifth volume).
Each edition includes new and revised modules, additional supporting tools and materials, and large compilations of scientific data sets.
The fifty-plus software simulations, tools, data sets, and other supporting materials in ecology, evolution, genetics, molecular biology, physiology, developmental biology, and botany contribute to a flexible problem-solving space for investigations that can be limited or quite sophisticated and challenging.
In each of the modules, the students craft a research question, pursue solutions to their problem, and finally decide on their criteria for closure and publication, just as scientists do.
The materials nominated for inclusion in the BioQUEST Library must have the potential to catalyze curricular change; for example, they must have a significantly robust problem space, the potential for students to pursue multiple hypotheses simultaneously, and the ability to generate and analyze large data sets.
The modules must also be open-ended in the respect that they must require students to assess the completeness of their problem-solving endeavors and the validity and utility of their answers.
